TELE® STYLE GUITARS

detail of bridge

Note the slot milled through the tailpiece that accommodates transducer leads.
Notice the tiny slots machined in the tailpiece located between the set screws on the individual saddle elements. The slots allow a much cleaner installation and prevents damage to the delicate transducer leads; a tiny channel is milled into the guitar body beneath each slot and is used as a raceway for each individual element lead.

Orca uses specially designed neck and bridge magnetic pickups built by Lindy Fralin Pickups. The steel pole neck pickup features adjustable pole pieces and provides a much warmer sound with enhanced mid range frequencies sought after by the jazz guitarist. The pickup can be switched in or out of phase when used in combination with the bridge pickup. The bridge pickup itself is a three wire with shield, coil tapped design. It offers either stock output or switches to blistering high output mode via a push-pull DPDT switch mounted on the tone control. The output of the magnetic pickup circuit and transducer elements are funneled to a specially designed buffer preamp built by Bartolini Pickups and Electronics.

The buffer preamp is important both as a signal amplifier and an impedance matching device. The signal from the magnetic pickups is independent of that generated by the transducer; they are sent to separate outputs via a special stereo output jack, allowing the magnetic signal to be sent to a combo amplifier, and the transducer signal to be ported to a separate channel of the same amplifier, direct to the PA system, or to a dedicated transducer amplifier. An onboard blender control allows the player to mix the magnetic and transducer signals to provide an infinitely variable combination of sounds.
Close up of the knob/switches From the player's perspective, interfacing with the guitars volume and tone controls is simple. The selector switch and magnetic pickup volume & tone controls are located in exactly the same position as a stock Tele®.... The volume control for the transducer elements is located in the same position as the volume for the magnetics. (Note the small concentric black volume ring beneath the gold dome knob.) A special "dual concentric" potentiometer manufactured by ALPS Components is used to facilitate the stacked volume control configuration. The "blender control" is a special 25K ohm dual concentric potentiometer with a built-in center detent that allows the player to "feel" the balance point between the magnetic pickups and the transducer elements.
