17th Century Italian style guitar - front view . . . . . . . . . . - - - back view

This guitar was made about 1975 for a Hollywood star. He wanted a guitar ". . . as fancy as you can build." I remarked "Well, there are limits to my time!" The marquetry of holly and walnut on the back and sides were effected with a yew fret saw which had a 20" deep throat. . . all this was done in public view at Colonial Williamsburg. The neck was inlaid with fine silver wire, and the piercing in the peghead is of Turkish boxwood; the rosette is ebony and ivory and the tie-off block on the bridge is overlaid with engraved ivory

Front view of a round shouldered jumbo under construction. In the background a 17 inch super jumbo with bear claw spruce, and a bound stairstep peghead. Both guitars are maple. I also made the backsaws, located on the bench.
